Hey!!! Happy New Year and Merry Navidad!

We here at Doulos are excited to get back to our ground breaking work!
Figuratively and literally we are discipling leaders in Christ, and we are
about to break the groud for our botanical garden expedition!

After much planning and blue prints we are taking our last field trips to local gardens to get ideas and tying our South American studies to this botanical science by looking at why people design gardens and what purpose they serve, especially in large cities like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. Our class is a true family, we are proud to be the architects of the grand design, and we will be sure to post pictures of the process. Each grade has a different role, and some work teams will be here to help. Our reading comprehension is on the rise, big time, and we will be taking standardized test pretty soon, so your prayers are greatly appriciated there, (our scores on these will determine our accredidation.

The hurricanes tore up the front area of campus and this garden will be turning something ugly into something beautiful, which also ties into our Bible class because that is what God Almighty is doing with each one of us wretches that he saves! Thanks for caring and stay tuned!

Salutations! Hi, my name is Micki Cain, or Miccaela , to my fourth graders I am Miss Micki.
I am from Littleton, Colorado, and went to College in Kent, Ohio, where my family now lives.
I met Krista and Chad through Young Life because my parents started it on this lil'island when I was lil' -haja.
Little did I know God would cross our paths again later. Graduating in Sociology and traveling Southern Europe after Bible College; then working in missions in Africa and Jamaica, I can see how God was preparing me for just this. God is such a master at deco-pajer!
I love these children and God decopajed our love when I met them last yr. I was guest speaking about Egypt, for their third grade unit on Africa. They still remember the songs I taught them and we still sing every day!
Right before the school yr started everyone was praying for a fourth grade teacher and God lead me to Krista last minute, but i am so blessed here in this visionary community. I will be married here in April to a Dominican man that teaches first grade at Jarabacoa Christian School, and we would love your prayers for this complex task we are assuming in and out of the class room!
In this lovely locoamotive and labratory of learning, this is what we are focusing on: In Geography we are learning all about South America, learning first how to read a map and find the rivers, captials, etc. We will do a huge focus on the amazon and natural resources later in the year. We have created a lot of neat songs to help them remember their material. We love the way God created melodies to make things stick!
In math we started with Geometry and we are really pulling for the memorization of the multipliction table. Then we are slowly moving into division. We had a great field trip to the Police Station discovering Math in the City. We asked the 'Coronel" what the death rate is in violence and car accidents. He told us about 2 p/mo. for each and then we multiplied it out and found that 48 people die in Jarabacoa each year from violence and car accidents. We are now looking to see how the birth rate compensates that. We found the number of prisoners Jarabacoa gets each year, and got a spontaneous tour of the jail cell, that really shocked them and we said God bless you to them, and talked about how to love them but not become one. That really brought numbers to life!
We play Sponge Bob monopoly on Fridays to figure out money; and the invertabrates we're studying in Science are in there too. I am very intent on showing the interconnectedness of all the subjects so that game is an answer to prayer!
Thinking like a scientist is our focus. Observing. Classifying. Record, Predict. and Conclude. We have a really cool song for that , and we got to share it with 5th grade. We've done some really cool experiments too. One with fish and taking their temprature and then again after ice was placed in their bowl. Then we found a worm's natural habitat by studying where they crawled to when put in sawdust, sand, dirt, and black soil.
The greatest part about this experiment was that the person who was to bring the worms didn't; so we had to dig and everyone was in super excited discovery mode looking in the wettest areas of the school and we were all listening to one another... wow.

So we're into vertabrates and invertabrates in the sea. Science seems to be our favorite class. English is all about learning how to write right now. We are in the middle of a Personal Narrative project where they are writting about "The Craziest Thing I've Ever Done'.
So we just finished the first writting project and I was congradulated for getting them through six drafts until they got it perfect. It is posted on the Library hall with the coolest pictures of the moral of the story... i.e. "don't put hot sauce in your eyes."
Along with weekly spelling, paragraph editing, and reading the "fouth grade nothing", they should be communicating on all sorts of levels before Christmas!
All in all we are getting to know each other better and discovering life together while we study Jesus every morning through Mathew. They love their memory verses which of course have songs to go along. For instance, here's our class pledge, (you may want to join us, it does wonders for the day): "I am a smart and valuble person.
I respect myself and I respect others.
My words and actions are kind and honest.
I accept only my best in all I do.
God loves me and made me special and I am proud to be me.
Jesus died for my mistakes and conquered death, so I will serve him with all my gifts and talents.

Emergency Teacher to the Rescue!

Hi, my name is Micki Cain and God led me to teach 4th grade at Doulos this year - just in the nick of time! I'm from Colorado and Ohio and have lived in the Dominican Republic as a child and last year, as well.

Living in Santo Domingo last year, I discovered I loved teaching. Last year, I was a guest teacher for this same group of kids for an Africa unit. It is CRAZY how God makes connections!

Please pray for me and my students for an excellent year!

Hi I'm Masiel and am in the fourth grade. My student number is #12 and I'm 10yrs old. I love to play futbol (soccer) and I'm Dominican and am learning English and I just think it is fantastic to be studying it! My eyes are brown and I have long hair and my teeth are white. I'm pretty and my coloring is Indian. I love to play and draw. My favorite vacation is when I went to Bavaro. It is at the very end of the island. It is a beach that has a hotel. When I went I swam in the pool and I rode on a train and then it left me really faaaar away! but it was so much fun.

I was born in the Dominican Republic and I'm now 10 yrs old. I run really fast and i love to play baseball. The most fantastic thing that has ever happened to me is that I learned very quickly to play baseball. I am first base-man and sometimes I even paly futbol... They call me "Bic Papi". Hi my name is Adriano and I love Nicole. She is my girlfriend but we only hold hands by our pinkies. The most embarassing thing that ever happened to me was when my pants fell down because I wasn't wearing a belt. Luckily, only my mom and friend, Chino, were there to see. Hola!! my name is Alrette and my favorite thing to do is to play fútbol (soccer). I started thinking about playing a long time ago until one day I decided to go practice and now I play with the big kids and I'm only 9 yrs old! In total, I have been playing for three years.

The best thing about being in fourth grade is my teacher. She is really good to all of us and teaches us many things. Thanks to her my class is very intelligent and she is unique. Her name is Iraissa and she kows a lot of Spanish, English and Italian. She's really smart and I like the way that she treats people.

I have a teacher that is so pretty and she has black hair and she is the queen of chiba (goats). I am so pretty and the queen of beauty, my teacher too. I have black eyes, my hair is brown and my skin is the color of café con leche. I like to play futbol and volleyball. I like to dance, go to church, hang out with my friends, and i also like to meet other kids my age. I know a lot of kids. Some talk to me a lot. some not. but i am still their friend. My best friends are: Masiel, Keren, Marines, Arlette. I like having lots of friends because then i have a lot of people to play with and I have a lot more fun that way. I have a little brother called Antony. He is also in the fourth grade. I can count on him to tell him my secrets and when I'm feeling down he lifts me up. I'm funny and i love to play tag and sports. Hello my name is Marinés and I'm a crazy girl. I'm in the Fantastic Fourth grade and I'm having an o.k year because I don't really write fast but I can run really fast! The happiest day in my life is when my dad comes to see us from New York. I'm small and have long hair that my mom fixes into beautiful styles every day. My eyes are black like the night and my smile is crazy. My favorite thing to eat is rice with yellow corn. Hola mi nombre es Karina! I have 2 sisters called Erika,and Paola my dad's name is Gabriel and my mom's name is Helena. I like to play kickball,soccer volleyball. I am in fourth grade class my teacher is Miss Iraissa. She is so pretty. I like almost every kind of movie. I like to go to the beach but it has a lot of salt. I also like to go to the pool and every kind of place that has water. I have a scar on my forhead. One day my dad told us that we wer going to go to the river. I had on very slippery shoes and I started running exitedly and when i went to stop I couldn't and banged myself against the door frame and hurt myself. It looked really bad. It was a deep cut and may dad and his friend took me to the doctor and I got five stitches! Then they took me out for pizza and I remember that that night i couldn't remember who anybody was. I only remembered my mom. I didn't recognize anybody. I like almost all the subjects , I am 9 years old I came from Colombia to the Dominican Republic with my dad and mom, and my two sisters.

Now i moved to the Dominican Republic because my granmother was sick and I'm having a great time here with my teacher named Ms. Iraissa. She's super nice, a great artist, and funny. My favorite sports are football,baseball,and basketball. I'm a class clown. I have nicknames in every sport I play. In baseball I'm Big Papi. In basketball I'm Cube Brain and in football my name is Paint Manny because im a quarterback. One of the scariest moments in my life was when I fell asleep (this happenend in New York city) and when I woke up my mom was gone and another woman was in her place. And I was so scared looking for her that I almost went nuts.

My name is Keren and I live in the Dominican Republic. I was born in the capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. My birthday is December third 1996. When I was born my parents thought I wasn't going to make it because in my mom's tummy my cord was too short and I was little and skinny. Now I am 10 years old and I like to eat a lot. My favorite food is ice cream, brownies, Burger king, Chinese food, pizza, Colombian food, Mexican food, and enchiladas. I have a lot of freckles on my face and my hair is dirty blonde. I have a little sister that is 8 years old.

Doulos discovery school is the best school because we can go to the beach called Samana. 4th, 5th, and 6th go to Spirit mountain (Manabao). My faviorte sport is soccer, I am the goalie in the soccer tournaments with little kids. I am the goalie for my team, my team is called ALL STARS!!!!!

My goalie coach is called Colla he is maried and has two (2) kids, he has black hair and he is tall.
